Sculpting for 12 hours, Endurance

Katabasis is the second unit of Endurance. In this unit we discussed pursuing and planning out said pursuits. Katabasis means to descend into the underworld.  I saw different people endure different things. Laura Dekker is one of those people, she was the youngest girl to sail the world. Learning her story was inspirational, she knew that she wanted to sail the world since she was a child and didn’t let anything stop her. For this AP, I chose to endure something for 12 hours. My options were limited due to my lack of resources and options at home but I decided to do something related to art. In quarantine, it's been difficult for me to adjust to certain routines so I felt that this action project could help the feeling of desolation. I was always interested in sculpting but I lacked clay and I remember using paper mache often in my old art classes. I made a mission and vision for this project. My vision was simple, I imagined a character of some sort made from different materials with the use of painting.  My mission was to pursue my interest in sculpting for at least 12 hours.

While recording I felt like Dekker in a way and I didn’t know which parts were the most important to record or say. I often thought about how I could most genuinely convey my struggles and what I was doing through the video. In the end, I do like the way it turned out, I loved using the medium and I’m positive that I will use this form of art in the future.  Along with the video, I checked in 12 times in written form.
